Video Conferencing

In 2008, the NPA departed on another adventure: video conferencing. During the 15th Annual NPA conference, two presenters from the United States and India presented their papers live over the internet with two-way video and audio communication.

This page will help you join this new revoltuion.

USB Headset

Strongly Recommended: USB Headset

Although most all webcams has a built-in microphone, it is highly recommended that you use a USB Headset. The USB part is simply a common connection all computers have. These headsets can cost as little as $20-$30.

They will make the video conferencing experience much better for you and the other participants so your voice will be clearer, and you will be much less likely to produce an "echo".

Buying a Webcam

Webcams are very cheap these days starting at $25 for a PC webcam. The better webcams have better quality and are sometimes worth the extra for them and they run around $80. Here is a guide to help you buy a webcam:

Webcam Buying Guide

You don't need to have a webcam to watch or hear a video conference. Having it will allow you to present or to join in the conversations.

We are using DimDim for NPA Video Conferences

Joining our Web Video Conferences

The software we are using for video conferences is DimDim. We have a new service that currently allows us 40 people to join a session. In the future, this can grow to be 100.

There is no software to download ahead of time. The software loads when the conference is in session.

This is our permanent room for our video conferencing. It will only work when the session has started.

Test Your Webcam with DimDim

This new service has a testing page which is quite nice. Go to the link below and then when the window in the middle presents a "Allow" button, click on "Allow". It will then turn on your webcam and record you for 15 seconds and then play it back. If you hear and see yourself in the playback, you know your webcam is ready for video conferencing with DimDim.

Paying your Annual Video Conference Fee

Video conferencing has proved invaluable for the NPA in meeting and making decisions long distance between NPA conferences. Yet, the free services do not work that well and paid services until now have not been affordable.

We are implementing a VOLUNTEER contribution for video conferencing of $30 a year. This will allow you to set up video conferencing 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Those who have video conferencing rights, will be able to set up as many meetings as they like to discuss matters, their work, their theory, or even make presentations of their work online across the world.

If you do not want to pay via the internet (using the buttons at the top of this page), you can send a check made out to David de Hilster to the following address:

David de Hilster
1360 Redondo Ave. #301
Long Beach, CA 90804

If this experiment is successful, we will look into the NPA paying for a portion or all of the video conferencing fees. Let's first make it work and who knows, it will become a permanent part of the NPA.
